For satisfying projection requirement and keeping my form as constant as possible, I decided to twist the unit to create slanted roof to secure shadow space from the direct natural light.

Wall detail -folding and joint-

A typical Unit has 16 surface sections with both front and back sides making total of 32 surfaces.
In this analysis we will designate surface numbers, 1 thru 16 refering to both front and back surfaces.
This elevation show the types of hinge to be installed in the unit at Folding Level 2 (size of 600mm).


Folding Level 1:
A total length of unit, when flat, is 150mmX16sections=2400mm.
When folded into two the size will be half of 2400 or 1200mm which might be difficult to handle.
Here two types of hinges will be enough, A and C types will satisfy the system.

Folding Level 2:
To make the size of typical Unit compact, we can fold again into half making 1200mm/2=600mm
which will be very compact to handle.
However, by doing so, we will have another type of joint B at surface section 12,13.

Folding Level 3:
In case you want to make the typical Unit compact, you can fold one more time as shown here.
However, by doing so, we will need more types of hinges, D and E.
To avoid this, it is recommended to stay at Folding Level 2 where we have two type A hinge and
one B type hinge, and the rest will be C hinges.

Light Model Experiment -Day(Sun) Light-

To find out the effect of sun light into the Stroll- By Maze Gallery, I have decided to conduct a light model experiment based on sun's path according to Summer and Winter solstices in London. Each increment of photo in this experiment equals to one hour of sun light casted onto the Gallery.
Therefore, in Summer we have 17hrs and 30min of daylight in comparison with Winter with only 7hrs and 30min has more light photo increments.
The summer increment and winter increment can be compared by looking vertically at same hour of the day. For instance, in the light measument by color, you can notice high intensity of light can be observed in summer (color green), but not in winter due to weak sun light.

Another interesting effecting tendency is that despite of the fact the height of wall is 4M with narrow corridor, in summer time the direct sunlight will penetrate directly on floor of the gallery. You can see this phenomenon at noon of Summer solstice. However, in winter time, due to low sun altitude angle, only weak diffuse light will penetrate into the space, making the space much attractive and soft.

Day Light/ Sun Light -Maze Gallery-

The unique configuration made possible through “Folding System Method” will be subjected to natural daylight throughout seasons.
Because composing material will be translucent in nature which will convert direct sunlight into soft diffused light,
the gallery will be filled with myriad of natural lights dancing throughout vertical ascending spaces.

Day Light Characteristics in the Stroll Gallery:
As soon as sun light hit the outer wall of the Gallery from east direction,
the surface will act as "Light Receiver". Since the material will be made of plastic composite,
opposite site of Light Receiver will play the role of "Light Generator".
When noon approaches where the altitude angle of sun light will be the maximum angle (67degrees in June 21),
the direct sun light will hit inner wall or screen.
The light and shadow of sun light will play chief role in day time Gallery.

I am now examining as to how I should arrange for the Exhibition.
I am not certain as to what kind of material I should use. I am still checking which cardboard paper has more durability.
As far as arrangement of my pattern is concerned at the Exhibition, I can either show on a wall or hung from a ceiling. To make my work impressive, I don't think its wise to put on a floor, because eye line is too low unless elevated up to near eye level.
If you see my blog, my new system can be adopted on a wall, hung from a ceiling or can be done as in awning.
The size of unit is 300(width) and length can be multiple of A3 sheets. So basically I can make length as long as I want to make.
In the Rhombus pattern, I made variation in them, 0. 10. 20.30, 45, 50, 60(max)degrees. By arranging diffent shape in such a way, it is possible to make very interesting gradation through controlling a light diffusing surfaces with positive or negative bendings. These total arrangement made very interesting and appealing as Light Generating and Light Receiving objects.

Further development: Analysis of My Pattern for 1-2nd term project

After completing two terms, I have realize the problems I had with term 1 project. For ther first term, I was just interested in making just to create the Rhombus Form without making careful observation and studies into the form as a system. Since initial Rhombus Project was not conceived as a system, it was very difficult to develop into further variations in a system. I have given careful thought into the Rhombus system and found out Folding Line is very important to develop further. However, I have kept the original concept:

1. To create a structural form byusing "Folding System" or making two dimensional flat sheet into 3-D structural form element.
2. To create Rhombus for negative or positive bendings to make it act as light reflecting element to generate a soft diffused light.
3. The create interesting system which has a potential of further development and application.

During the construction, when I stroll around the site, I was very curious and filled with high expectation how this project will change the area. The area which has been developed and designed by Japanese renowned architect, Tadao Ando has been marked with high expectation from design professionals and public as well.

Site Concept

Location
The site is located at the corner terrace of ICA 1 st Floor facing the Mall and a large outdoor stair at Waterloo Place.
A similar volume building situated symmetrically to each other being divided by the stair leading to Waterloo monument. Peop le strolling at the Mall or visiting the Monument will notice the proposed structure and will soon be a part of visiting spot to enjoy ever changing natural and artificial light.

Volume
Because my structure will be occupying the terrace area of ICA, it should be able to communicate with the strolling or visiting people around the area and also far beyond to the Park. Thus, the volume should be able to be visible from surrounded area.
In this case, to minimize the load over the terrace the height of of structure should be around 4 meter.
To have maximum exposure of the structure, it is better and effective to place at the corner of L-shaped part of existing terrace.

Access
The terrace of ICA can be approached from the Mall, Stair and back entrance. However, to make the location familiar it is pre ferable to create a new access leading directly to the site from the Mall and Stair by means of barrier -free ramp system.

Revision of Manifesto

First of all, the Gallery should be multi-purpose oriented space. The space should be flexible enough to provide various usage by the planner and curator.
The most important mission is how to present art and other object by artist effectively. The lighting must serve to that purpose.
Thereby, the Gallery must have lighting device or element to serve that end. Of course, playing with light will be one of my lighting in a Gallery, but not going to be everything.
I really have to think about the activities will be taking place inside the space. Anotherword I have to design the light to suit the activity take place in a space. By analyzing the activity, I can foresee how to create a lighting device or design which will be best fit for the purpose..
In the last session, I submitted the image of water to express my feeling for a light. That do not mean I will be designing a pool over the Gallery. I want to have water flowing behind the art, which might have very interesting effect on art and surrounding space.

For this Gallery I want to create a new pattern which contain water device to have richer effect in a space.
The new pattern I will be designing must encompass the quality I haved described. I don't know this is not possible to clear, but I certainly will try.

Conditions of making:
I have prepared laser cut sheets with cuts and folds ready to challenge making model. I have selected to make all Rhombus to be in (+) or in silhouette when lights are casted from behind while X will be in negative (-) or will be lit from reflective lights from the Rhombus.

Programming of Pore Openings and Bendings

To explain the possibility of Rhombus X Pattern, we can express by designating each column to be
+ or - bending.
Also each designated column's openings can be controlled
(maximum 15mm,
medium 10mm,
minimum 8mm
or closed 0mm)
by means of inserting a flat plate into the space created by Rhombus and X.

You can create different design by manupilating
+ and - arrangement.
It amazing that you can create many different 3 Dimensional designs from a piece of 2D paper.
Thus, to create million possible combination of different lighting pattern.

Flock of Rhohmbus

When the cuts and folds are made onto the sheet which can be either paper, plastic or metal, there will be four different qualities of lights can be seen due to the space created between Rhombuses and resulting X. Both Rhombus and X will make up the system, therefore, I called the system “Rhombus-X”. Both Rhombus and X forms can be made into both positive (+) and negative (-) bending. When Rhombus is in (+), while surrounding X being negative, then the Rhombus will be seen as in silhouette while X being lit from the reflective light from the back side of Rhombus. On the other hand, when Rhombus is in (-), X will be in silhouette while Rhombus will cast indirect light from X being the reflector. By manipulating the type of bending, we can control the pattern. However, by making Rhombus all (+) will induce curvature in the sheet making it to curl. This is so due to summation of surface length is larger than that of X shapes. To achieve flatness in sheet, we need to make Rhombus and X alternate both (+) and (-) in equal order.

Here I have made some studies on this pattern with chops stick and wire.
For the chop stick version of pattern, it is very easy to hold the pattern in tact.
For a wire, it provides very sensitive and delicate design.
To be a lighting fixture, it might be better with bamboo wire instead of steel.

PROTOTYPE : Back Light Wall

1. What is it?
Its a glowing light wall with one direction with diffused light (like shoji) and direct light on the other direction.
--What does it do?
It provide back light which provide better ambience in a space.
---What's the point?
To make soft light in a space with directional quality.

2. Where is the light?
A fluorescent tube is installed at the floor between wall and the glowing light wall.

3.What is made out of?
To provide soft light, it should be made of paper (preferbly a Rice Paper)
or perhaps chipboard, or plastic.

4. How big is one to one prototype?
It should be the size of wall, but can be at the size of 1200mm.

Utilization of light as inspirational medium in a space

As human history reveals, the basic needs to carry on human life are to have food, clothing and shelter.
We have been trying to tackle how light can contribute and enrich our lives through manipulation of space in relation to light. In a way, light can be very objective in terms of carrying out our lives, because we need light to see and recognize the situation.

But on the other hand, it can be very subjective or emotional where one can be excited or be calm.

In a history of creating a space, there are definite struggle how to bring in sunlight into the space to see. To become architecture, we need a lighting penetration which will not only be functional; it must provide beauty and inspiration when penetrating or emitting out from them.
Although sun cast the light all around the world equally on a basis of latitude, there are definite difference in light according to each country’s environment and culture. In Meiji Shrine, we have experienced and witnessed very unique moment in lighting during twilight. What made me feel and inspired when we walked through the shrine.
During this holiday, I have also visited Code d’ Azur where I have experienced different feeling during the twilight. Both are similar moment during sunset, yet both are equally beautiful and inspirational.
How to obtain this quality of inspiration into our works?
Perhaps, this will be the question we will be asking for the rest of our creational lives.

The system definitely contains capability to stop the penetration of light when pores are directed upward. When turned downward, the light penetrated through which can be utilized as task light. It will be interesting if this system can be cooperated into some architectural element.

Pore opening

I have visualize the lighting transmission medium as similar to skin's pore. As in skin when temperature goes up, the pore opens at maximum. When temperature goes down, pore start to close. In my model, I have tried to simulate this mechanism. I am not certtain as to what kind of material I should select to be close to have this behavior. For instance, if I can put a signal into the material, say 0 to 100% of opening, I can control the light transmission into the space through the material.
Perhaps we can use memory metal alloy to let the alloy memorize the degree of openings according to programming spaces.
Another task is to find out how to apply this material onto the light form which I have created. Perhaps, the light medium flows between the double coverings of bubbly form.

The lighting medium, perhaps very strong electro-illuminescence material.
I will continue to make a research as what is best suited material available in today's or near future material for this project.

Adding some explanation for lightgram...

I would like to add some of my additional explanation for my creating spacial program for each activity.

The reason for creating each activity program.
Each activity has certain spatial program. Each activity require certain volume and expanse to satisfy the activity.
Parameters for deciding each spatial programs are as follows:

1. Density Index
how many person should occupy a space.
This might be called as density of space.

2. Workability Index:
This parameter will provide wheather or not each programs can cope with the requirement from the stand point of performance.

3. Inspirational Index:
This parameter will be very spiritual one. If you are meditating, you need to make a ceiling high rather than low. This parameter is very subjective one.

4. Lighting Index:
This will be a main parameter for this project. As I delineated at my blog, all the activity programs are subjected to controlled by "Lighting modes produced by Pattern Material".

This table shows lighting modes produced by Pattern Material


The openings of light penetration to be controlled from 0 to 100% to obtain ambience in a space.
By doing so, the lighting required by each activity will be controlled accordingly.
Further, the lighting levels from a pore or openings have designed in four types:

a. direct concentrated light
b. concentrated diffused light
c. strong indirect light
d. soft indirect light

Moving Light Mode:
But artificial light's movement might hinder the activity in a space.
Therefore, we will provide the movement to certain activity which do not affect by it.
The movement of light will be classified into increment of three speeds.

(1) one sweep movement in 10 hours or simulate sun movement.
(2) one sweep movement in one hour.
(3) one sweep movement in one minute.

The movement of light in a space can be interesting but can be a problem. We really don't pay attention to daily sun's movement.

My project's main theme is manupilation of openings to control the penetration and level of light. Lighting can be very effective design medium to express the space. It can not only change the expression and how it looks in a space, but it can change the perception of three dimensional qualities in it (depth, height, texture etc).
At the start of this project, I have submitted a simple expression of unit space where a linear light sweeped the space with movement. Since then, I became very curious and interested in how moving light change the space.
Right now, I am attempting to define a program for each activity which might take place in a space. By defining a progam for each activity, it is possible to assign a suitable or optimal lighting condition in a space. For manupilating the light, I have shifted my interest from slit to pattern. The reason for this is that by cutting into a single ply of sheet, I can come up with three dimensional quality producing interesting texture and penetration of light. With these interesting patterns, I can produce different expressions as I have already submitted in my blog.
A new type of light produced with each pattern, overlapping with each activity program will influence the space.
My main interest is how to define a space with each activity with assigned program with overlapping pattern.

Frame Pattern

I have been exploring apossiblities of slit openings in space.
When light enters through a slit, it induce a dramtic light in a space.
Together with a movement, a space become very dynamic ensemble.
Now, I would like further to experiment with slit system where each frame component when assembled, produce
a mass of slits.
If I can control each slit, it can produce very interesting light penetration.
Because of being frame, it can be easily produced and can multiply into the infinity.
I want to see if the frame can lined in curved manner.
If I do make a curve, the light penetration between each frame will be varied.
By changing the distance of frame, we can control the density of light penetrating into the space.

Application of unit space/Moving Light

By utilizing same thinking, we can create similar slit which will make possible for the penetrating light to create "Moving Away".
This light definitely has a different feeling for moving away from you as if you are going somewhere.
From observing the unit space resonse to the penetrating light, I have noticed the possibility of seeing moving light from outside.
If I can make the unit space in "rice paper" , it is possible to observe how light moves from all sides. This can be termed as "Looking Out".

the top right and left: Looking from outside.
Point source create movement.
depend on each unit, the movemen should be controlled.

bottom: Combination of unit space.You can create this unit as small scale from large scale.

Moving Space/ Moving Light

I have conducted an experiment of moving light for the inside of space where linear light move toward you in various speed. "Moving Toward"
I thought this "moving toward" light in a unit space was very beautiful in a way it swept the light in unit space.
Why this intriguing light attracted me? I feel this is very basic light which we feel in everyday light, but unnoticed.
Moving light which we feel in everyday life, will obviously the movement of sun.We feel it , but unnoticed as if we breath an air.
How to develop this idea into this project will be my cheif intension.
If there is source of light which will be located outside of unit space, moving and creating the movement can be realized.
Then as in the experiment, I can make more realistic apparatus.

Moving Light = Changing Space

 I want to observe and experiment how a space changes as light moves.

                Moving Light = Changing Space

will bring a dramatic change in space.

Moving light is not unusual one. The sun moves and changes the environment as earth turns around its axis.
The movement of sun light dictates the life pattern of all living creatures on earth.
But by controlling the point source's speed or intensity, they can create a large impact on one's psychological and physiological implications.
This control mechanism in a moving light = control on a mental and physical aspects in a people, we can make a some sort of sequence or modulation in light to control the movement in people.
If we can create a moving light which will add value to a space might produce completely new dimension in how we interpret the space.
 On the other hand, moving light can not only affect the visual field and kinetic motions in people, but we can certainly control the movement and what to see in a space.
 
 Therefore, I would like to proceed to find the difference in space when space are manupilated with moving light.

MANIFESTO ---Ver.2---

Now having studied and experimented with the light, I am asking the question what is essential qualities in a light that make people to excited and be calm.
Indirect light where the direct light have been reflected, indeed, made space warm and spacious as I have seen in many instances in a space.
In other hand, the direct light made art object or people easy to see the contrast in light and shadows. An emphasis in light or highlight made an object to see what you want show in a gallery. A gallery, in a way, composed of two types of lights, diffuse and highlights. These two types of lights dominate the gallery space. What other lights can be permitted in the gallery? As I have made an experiment on moving light, it really was surprise and unexpected type of light. What happens if light chase wherever you wonder in a gallery. It will be fun and will be a art itself.

Proposal 1:
In a case of Rome’s Pantheon, the opening at the top skylight permit sunlight to enter into the space making a space, a sort of, sun clock. Also the reflected light makes whole space to glow during the day in different color temperature. So, if we can simulate the movement of sun or changing of color temperature, it will be something.

Proposal 2:
Another topic, I wanted to pursue is the moving light really capture ones attention. This light can be of indicator light, just like a indicator lights for the air strips to bring the airplane safe. When you walk, the light will direct you where you want to go as in a sign board.

Manifesto

As I experienced light in Lisson Gallery, I have realized and learned the power of what light can do to the space.
What light does to the space surprised me and excited me.

Without light the world will be total darkness.

As the sunrise approaches, the universe start to glow.
As sun hits at peak of noon, the space will be cheerful and lively.
As the sunset encroaches, the space will be filled with light orange hue.

Nature's light has many expressions.
When the night comes, there will be moonlight and starlight.
When Edison invented a bulb, whole world changed!
When light enters the space, I feel the space.

With different types of light source, the space respond with different character and feeling.
Main compositions of light are direct and indirect light.
I was very much impressed with the beauty and power of indirect light, both natural and artificial.
How to integrate these lights into space as I have often seen in many great spaces, as in.....

With using the tool of artificial light is it possible to simulate the beauty of light in a space.

Natural light + Artificial light

Lisson Gallery, white box shaped gallery looked like cut the box with scissors. The space was organized from white wall, ceiling and light which penetrated into the space from well thought out openings.
It was so beautiful the combination of natural diffused light and whiteness(pureness) of the space surrounded by ceiling and wall.

Artificial light also supports the beauty of the space, by means of not empasize arificial light itselt but adapts and controls the volume of the light.

I sketched one rough drawing of the reception space.
I don't know how the openings and lighting fixtures are organized which brings natural light into the space, but natural light penetrating could be the northen light. I like the combination of the diffused light and fluorescent light which matches the color temperature of penetrating natural light.
Both lights reflect the inner white space, making the space larger and lighter.

After visiting the gallery, i have realised the power of natural light penetrating into the space.
However, it can be augmented with well thought out complementary artificial lights.
I guess, it is important to control the lights that hits the arts and other important pieces that the museum or gallery wanted to show.
For this purpose, it is important to control the penetrating natural light and at same time, it is must to add an artificial light to make the space meaningful.
