..the rest of the model is screwed up. one side looks fine, but that back coudn't be cut, because there was a thickness problem...didn't want to cut the rest to keep something for drawings. John will cut another for RIBA 1

sun diagram through gallery

these digrams are killing me...they erase themselves, or they refuse to open...end of year bugs i guess....either way, the idea is, that i show 3 reflections for each sun ray shown, during each time of day...along with a gradiant contour map below that will show the overall lighting condition and how it changes throughout the day. It will be an A1. I have also finshed the plan for my physical model of my gallery....steel strips and plastic strips, MANY OF THEM will be attached to create the form of the gallery and will be able to split to show the internal condition. of course i still need to finish the one shown below, but that will be taken care of soon.
Plan till Monday.
Sections: 4 section through the gallery showing 3 different lighting conditions.
Explination of the difference between the two surfaces for the surface gallery, and the 2 for the object gallery
a CLEAN explination of how the gallery form in driven by lighting respective lighting conditions. this will be very important i think...and get everything prepared for the model making.
maybe i'll throw an animation in there as well
QUESTION: should I spend time getting a digital presentation ready?

manifesto

MAciej Woroniecki

Process of Light Containment

In order to build with light I want to be able to capture it in order to control the amount I work with. In order to optimally use natural light entering an enclosed space I must first contain it within an area that harnesses and intensifies it as best as possible. After this I can mould the light I’ve gained to suit my program.

This process is obtained through TWO SURFACES which, while defining the structure, contain and control light. The space in-between these surfaces will be the containment area. Light entering the containment area will flow through slits covering the length of the gallery, which grow and shrink in length and width depending on the exhibits immediately adjacent. Once light has penetrated into the containment area, it reflects off of the many curved surfaces that peel down from the openings of the outer surface and the white inner floor. The intense diffuse and direct light then passes through a second surface to the exhibition area of the gallery. The inner surface envelopes the entire exhibit space of the gallery. This inner surface is a controlling surface, guiding light to exhibits and manipulating the type of light that illuminates the work within.

outer layer...WORKS

quite a nice little discovery in this test. The closer i can get the outer louvers to the base of the floor, as i've accidentally done in my plan, the more surface i attain to relfect off of, giving me a higher diffuse level, and more overall light to take further to the exhibition area.
need some drawing of this.

GRUESOM PLAN

IT HAS TAKEN ME FOREVER TO MAKE THIS PLAN...I DONT KNOW IF ITS BEEN WORTH IT....I NEED TO FIGURE OUT A WAY OF MAKING THE SLIVERS INBETWEEN MY SURFACES NOT LOOK LIKE SIMPLE LOUVERS. AFTER SUGGESTIONS MADE DURING TUTORIAL, I'VE TAKEN THE INBETWEEN SPACES (BETWEEN THE EXHIBITS) AND USED THEM AS CONTAINMENT AREAS TO BRING IN LIGHT FROM THE SIDE OPPOSITE THE SUN ( NORTH SIDE YA). THIS COULD BE INTERESTING. I HAVE WAISTED SO MUCH TIME ON THE 3-D MODEL...NEED TO SOMEHOW MAKE IT SIMPLER...THE MODEL THAT IS. WILL SPEND THE REST OF THE NIGHT WORKING ON A LIGHT DRAWING...WHICH I THINK WILL GO WELL NEXT TO THIS DRAWING...AND A DETAIL SHOWING HOW THE LIGHT PENITRATES INTO THE GALLERY FROM THE LIGHT CONTAINING 'WELLS'...COULD BE GOOD FOR MY THIN TS.

crap render...good future

bleeding-good.jpg now that i can render the lighting condition that occurs on the inside of the gallery i can adjust my containing spaces according to time of day, and where the are meant to spill the light. i have decided that i will configure the main light capturing openings according to 3 times of day. 9:00, 12:00, and 16:00. this way with three seperate positions of the sun i can allow for a continuous spillage of light to happen through the gallery by adjusting to openings to act on all three times of day...i think this is going to mean reconfiguring the interior spaces and connection..which i 'think' is good because this way light will be leading the direction in which my gallery will go....finally?

spaces

really i should in a way start from scratch but it seems that the spaces i am going for and a way to make two surfaces do what i want, can be done...after making all the adjustments that i am suppose to make to the gallery i will start to focus on my TS again....Javier has been booked up since yesterday...there is a 15 person waiting list...but tomorrow i will try to get inbetween tutorials....need to take pictures and re-do the plan AFTER the 3-D model has been done....not to mention i think that the building needs more openings and possibly more 'capture spaces'.

gallery circulation and definition

here is my justification for my gallery and the way it is situated on site. first i have placed a grid over the site (2m x 2m) then through chossing a path through the gallery from all the possible routes, the gallery begins to become defined through seperation, and then through the area needed for capturing light seperated the galleries further. because there are different levels of controlling light, the seperation widths differ.

SIMPLE LAYOUT

i'm trying to explain my procedure as simply as i can. basically the galleries connect with one-another and they run sort of parrallel to eachother. the bottom bits are studies of how i can get the optimized configuration. this is where my mind gets to me...how do i justify moving the connections...ITHINK its getting somewhere but the way i move them is just trying to see what possibilities i have....i guess this is where scripting would help out.

GOOD day, MANY failures

well today I found to be a very productive day....almost everything didn't work out the way I had imagined...which was actually quite good i thought....except for my CNC thing. something got screwed up with the file and what cam out was a big bubkass. it would have really looked super duper, but the second cut was too far down.....not exactly sure, will have to go over it with John when he comes back,......Monday. was hopeing to have them done, but no chance....either way, making these things today really helped me to think a bit straighter about the gallery and what I want to do in it, as well as how. already set in my mind is how to layout the gallery, Thanks to Natasha and Monia, and what kinds of test i can do, to capture and control light. From now on the goal for me is...at least 2 CNC models per week, and one workshop made model per week. evenings for drawing when i'm in the workshop. need to really experiment...on things that need experimenting....so maybe i should figure out what those things are first.

ELEMENTS OF MY GALLERY

so here is a sort of explosion of my gallery. It works like this....i have an outer surface and an inner surface, and the inbetween space is where the light is captured and contained. there are three room, each serving a specific program (OBJECT /sculpture, Surface/Print, Video/Media Installation), with different light qualities.

NEW GALLERY APPROACH

here is a new appraoch that I have taken towards the gallery. Right now it is really quite basic. I have been doing simple light test and am first trying to design my gallery around them. this idea and my light tests are connected with my first light model...the one with the black and white slivers. depending on their relative position to one another the light captured inbetween them is different and light light spilling into the gallery differs. My one BIG whole in all of this is that i have not gotten to my main capturing device. What i will ultimately want to do is capture light on the inside of the Gallery (from the outside, and artificial lighting) then bleed it out to the exhibit spaces. This is the best suggestion from the last jury, in my opinion. in the mean time if have been building my light................AHEM
what else is there...oh ya...need to build a model for these light tests...similiar to the black and white panel one...but this one will do EXACTLY what i want it to do....though I NEED the workshop in order to make it.

light tunnel / ugly render

I've been thinking about a new way of approching the Gallery...I was looking back at the comments I recieved during the last Jury. One of the most helpfull comments was given by Alex when he suggested looking at where and how I am bringing in the light and containing it. He suggested to bring the light into the center then once its INSIDE spill it out (controlled) to the rest of the Gallery. In this awful rendering below I have taken one oven...oops I mean gallery (du dump ching) and with one curved tube like structure am trying to capture light into the tunnel part and blead it down into the rest of the gallery. This is a pretty ugly beggining, but with a lot of luck and a bit of work I hope it will turn out nicely. I am again left, however, with the problem of how I meathodically design a system that controls how I spill light into the gallery. I would love to design some sort of 'UNIT' that i can work with...like Martins cups for example, but not cups....you all know what I mean....

A Recipe for Brilliance...he he

My cooking metaphor for the perfect gallery.....first try at this...comments welcome...same conditions as before, apply :)

Capturing (cooking) Light in Order to Spill/enjoy it.

The Architecture of Capturing light is similar to the way we oven roast a chicken. We place the chicken into the oven covered with spices and other ingredients that will ultimately make the chicken taste wonderful. Once in the over the chicken roasts and the delicious fat spills out from the chicken into its pan. This tasty fatty liquid is not left in the pan, it is used again to baste the chicken. Afterwards when the chicken is done it is consumed and the spilled out fat is used as sauce to cover other portions completing the meal. The spillage of the chickens fat and its use on the chicken completes a wonderful dinner. At least this is so in my case.
How do we roast light then and use its ‘fat’? Maybe this isn’t the right question. Perhaps we should split a gallery into ingredients.
We shall call the gallery a home, a home that consists of ovens. In this manner we shall call the exhibition spaces the ovens. The light that comes out from within the oven is the juicy fat that we can all enjoy and use in different and ‘personal’ ways. Perhaps it might not be so pleasant to spend too much time in an oven, but in a ‘gallery-oven’ the temperature is set just right.
In order to cook up a great exhibition within MY GALLERY, one must prepare the main ingredient, light, in exactly the correct way. In this case that means how exactly we place it within the oven. To translate even further, how we gather and contain enough light in the appropriate areas. Once the light has been contained properly within the oven (exhibition space) we must set the cooking tray appropriately so that the spillage can be used to complete the meal/exhibition. It is exactly here that controlling the spillage of light comes into play.
Within my Gallery there are 3 ovens. All three being quite different from each other though cooking the same dish , simply in different ways. My Gallery does not cook chicken, but a roast, a roast in three different ways. WELL DONE, MEDIUM, AND RARE. Rare being a gallery were the spillage of light is extreme and fresh. Containment in the RARE gallery is minimal.
And so, once the ingredients, and preparations have been done rightly according to the Gallery recipe, the exhibition, like a great meal, will be too tempting to pass up.

existing project

this is a project I stumbled on by Grimshaws for a Manhattan tube station where the reflective dome brings light in from the outside, lighting the underground AND the tunnels leading to the platforms. The light is basically captured in the dome then reflected down to the sub-structure. At night however, the dome is artificially lit and continues to light the subway. This project has similarities to what I want to do with my project...I just need to get help trying to explain, coherently what it is that I want to do. I know what I want to do, I just need to make it sound great, because I can never seem to get the idea across.

First thing on my schedule, I think, is to relax and re-energize for the third and final term in this year. I need to re-think the approach I have been taking towards my Project and Gallery...with as little stress as possible so that I can think clearly. so Here it is....my schedule:

since: 3MStudio work
Today. Portfolio re-do (new layout will be posted)
thurs 6th —gallery re-think, re-design + manifesto
fri 6th —gallery + 2 A2 layouts
sat 7th — 3MStudio
sun 8th — 3MStudio
mon 9th — Light build
tues 10th — Light build
weds 11th —Light build + HTS
thurs 12th — T.S with Javier + Gallery work
fri 13th — HTS
sat 14th — trying to take a break (doubtfull, so gallery work or Light if not finished)
sun 15th —same as above
mon 16th —Gallery + new CNC + laser model
tues 17th —Gallery
weds 18th — Preparing for previews
My light will be finished by that Wed. deadline. Due to finances I will be able to make about the same amount that I have done now as an addition...new light, but same material.

concentrating containment

i have been looking at different modes of arranges members in order to produce different measures of light.containment. with every different type there are very many different variables...making rating them very difficult..very. I cant really get my head around it..anyway, because they create a form, when put together, i have been thinking about how then this can generate a form/system that is based on light containment, through my entire gallery.
here is a first stab at how the arrangement contains light first, then is concentrated and a form is created from it.

manifesto

with this manifesto, I think what I would like to do is just calrify ALL of the things that I would like ot do with my gallery containing light......I need a reason to contain it..so I think that was one of the things I needed to explain.

The Sun will not stand still for me. It crosses the sky from the East to the West defining day and night. I cannot reach out and stop it at the position I prefer, nor can I dim it or make it brighter. All that I can do is contain as much of it as possible, and use that contained light for my benefit.

The Sun
The Sun is a bright sphere. It is so bright that it damages our eyes when we look directly at it. It is a light source that illuminates the earth for us, but we never really see it as the source. It is such a constant that we live in its effect as a norm.

The Gallery
The Gallery is lit by the sun. It is a container of the suns light. Because the sun never stands still, the gallery will use the light it contains in a consistent and intelligent way. The walls of the gallery are like a 'light sponge', soaking in the light on one side in order to release it out on the other side in a controlled and specific way.

Contained Light.
Like sun light, the source of the light within the gallery MUST NEVER BE SEEN. The result of how the light is contained by the gallery is what is apparent. Because there are different programs within the gallery, there are different lighting conditions, hence different measures of light containment.

Three Programs.
Within the Gallery there are three specific programs each distinct from one another. There are objects, surfaces, and projections. Each of these requires a different type of light. One source of light is contained and then transformed to fit three specific conditions.

Parameters for Containment.
In order to be able to contain enough light to control and suit one of the three programs, there must be enough light to work with. Because of this, the angles at which Sunlight would enter the containment area of the gallery(the interstitial space, i.e the wall) would be at the limits of the optimal Minimum and Maximum angles the sun takes throughout the year. This way, there is enough light to work with, and enough to dim if need be.

Control.
The amount of control there is on the contained light can vary and change specific to the level of light contained. If the day is very bright, the containment area must be able to contain the light in a more restricting way, no allow as much light through as normal.

The Sun has set.
After the dusk has come and gone, containment continues. The containment areas continue to contain and control the light within. Artificial light is now the source being controlled. Neither the view from the exterior nor the view from the interior exposes the source to sight.

No.Source.Light

The gallery will be lit by a constant level of light that the gallery will produce by containing all the light within it. It soaks up light, and becomes saturated with light, though the source of the light is never seen. With all the light that is contained the gallery then arranges and designates where and how to use the contained light for the purpose of the exhibition within.

pin-up sheets

here is some of the material if presented for teusdays pin-up

i guess now what I need to do is define EXACTLY what containing is to me. I think it definitely needs to do with containing light and then USING IT....otherwise, why the heck am i containing it...and since I want to use it as well, in what way do I want to use it....if thats too much, then I am going in the wrong direction....
here it is....I want to contain as much light as possible from the sun.
I want to be able then to gather my contained light and USE IT.
The building is a light storage.

Alisa Andrasek

The Alisa Andrasek LEcture,
Many of the images shown during the lecture where very beautiful. most of the terms, however, were too clever for me. All the talk about scripting was a bit beyond me, and I didn't quite understand why she expected all of us to know and understand most of the theory behind the script she wrote...or her worker bees wrote for her. Either way it was pleasent looking at the very slick images.
Context.
I think the question posed by Kevin about if any benifits existed structurally and creativly in looking at organic/natural parametric (i forget the term she used) organization/complexity....there were just so many terms I didn't understand :)...was a wonderful one. I think she half answered the first part of the question...that structural development and understanding behind the production and generation of this field are taking place, but on the creative part...well i think she dodged the question. I felt that most of the work was a bit too ephemeral for my taste...a nice partition wall...a skin that you can drape over any object...fine. She sort of showed the origin of the design but not really how it benifited what they were actually doing. One enormous dissapointment followed, in my opinion, the most interesting moment. When she showed a design that began at the human scale, i began to take interest. A dress that was created out of a pattern generated from her catalog of script, then all of a sudden she said 'and now we can take the same skin and cover a building'...is that was the skins of buildings are? just another dress that might look good draped over the sears tower....maybe thats how you make old buildings new...give them a new skin. either way I found that part disspointing. another dissapointing explaination was for a partition wall that she rushed through and placed it in no context.......... just showed the code, how it was generated but gave no specificity to what it could be other then a partition....something nice....., I thought that one of the biggining images of a chanty town in Caracas was wonderful.....a really beautiful image. so overall...dissapointed such beautiful images dont have that salt to back themselves up....waiting for tomorrow however.

ERASED manifesto!

here is the manifesto that was also erased...whats going on.
this is really a brainstorming manifesto. trying to find out what I want from light and what direction I would like to go in for the next phase of the project....and film 4.

what is / what should & will be

1. light is never turned off
2. The light source is never seen
3. Light hides, but can always be found
4. we build with light, hence everything is a source of light
5. light needs to be able to shine at any place within a space
6. light creates a mood, so mood exists entirely within a space
7. in order to light our space we must release the hidden light

Right now, light is completely disconnected from the structure it lights. It is an accessary
eventhough it is as important as the concrete glass, and steel encapsulating it.

Our Light (the 'now light')

Our light is a design piece with a single source, sometimes moved around when a task
is moved . It is a bulb with a pretty dress. This dress is changed
when a new and better one comes in stock, or because a brighter one is needed. it is still
a single light that diconnected from the architecture it lights. In most cases it is insufficiant
and sub-standard.

Supporting Light (the 'will be light')

I propose a light that illuminates what needs to be lit. I propose a light that eminates from our
surroundings. the source of this supporting light is never seen. only the fractures made on the
surfaces within a space, from which the light beams out, are seen. Because this new light is another
building component, it is a solid and has large mass. it is the wall, it is the cieling and the floor.
This new light is the material around us, but hidden from us.

Freeing light (the new light)

1.This light is never turned off, so how do we turn it on in order to use the light? 2. Where is the 'ON'
switch? 3. what controls this light and what limitations does this light have? 4. What type of lighting
comes from this light.

1. Once we know where we want our light, we must fracture the skin
covering it in order to let it out.
2. Once we have fractured the skin the light naturally flows out
from within.
3. We control this light because we control the surfaces of our
buildings. The limitations are in how much we decide to fracture the
skin of our building and expose the internal light. we are the
limitation to how much light is found and freed.
4. Primarily this light serves an ambiant purpose, though if fractured
correctly the light can be guided to become a task light.

ERASED!

this entry was somehow erased....how? no idea.

Film 3 'Light Addiction...the proccess of'
film3-image.jpg
Download file

Toyo Ito lecture:

Although I could barely hear at all... the discussion in the front members room with Ito San was very nice. The moment I enjoyed the most was when the process of creation was discussed. The way that Toyo Ito goes through the proccess in his office I found very nice. so nice in fact that I am thinking about going down the same road myself. I thought, however, that next time 'The Master' is asked to translate, he should have a microphone. his translation I think is very good but you can barely hear him, and with a discussion with so many students in such a small space, a microphone is definitely needed. Also, is the meetings are meant to be only for AA students then that should be enforeced somehow, half of the students there were not from the AA...for sure! half of the people around me I have never seen before. If it cant be then it should also be open through invite to students from outside...no point in waisting space at such a nice discussion.

The postcards go through the initial addiction to the scoring some light from a 'light dealer', and finally end with the crazy detox, and coming down off of light. The light is taken and captured within all of those who consume it through different methods. one can pound light into themselves, ingest it, of suck it out straight from the source...in this case a light bulb. This is connected to my manifesto through the idea of capturing light yet still allowing the glow of light to slightly escape through a permiable material...in this case..ME. what could be nice is the a time decay. you need to keep consuming in order to glow, because the light dies off after a period, so later i might deal with the idea of i light that needs to move or somehow recycle itself inorder to keep glowing while being captured.

update

this is difficult....I have been trying to get the right image of a burglar....but nothing.....two hours of surfing and nothin....how is that possible! I wanted to use the heist seen in HEAT but i couldn't find the right image....anyway, i think for the movie I will show a dinner between me a a couple of friend at which I will periodically steal their light and at the end it will be completely dark....and while I am trying to escape, because I dont see anything, I will stumble over and hit my head on the coffee table, the end.

well, its a work in progress.
