LIGHT. FORM. vol.6

In architectural term, “boundaries” of light may be referred to a passive form of light by the use of static light or dynamic form through the use of moving light. It does not clearly defines it self whether to contain or to separate, but to indicate the nature of the space. It is a tool to support organizing a space for any reasons it may serve; safety, advertisement, clarification, communication and as such. After the sunset, all the activities happening on the streets hold their peculiar illuminance to indicate their territories so as to avoid unexpected contiguity. Objectively, this aggregated effects of light turns in to a flow of light and can be interacted as a visual form that was created by the various wills of each individual and social organization.

Human + Time + Light = Form

At the beginning of the year, I have set up a specific agenda to explore forms in an architectural context through this interrelation of human, time and light, which has allowed me to evaluate the subject of light form a completely different perspective.

I started thinking that I want the animated light which primarily is to program people's movement, to be able to adapt specific requirements at each spaces. Tons of LEDs are being controlled by another layer of mesh which can change the dispersion level.

Lighting Intensity Control

In general, the spatial illumination is divided into dim and vibrant lighting. When a space is available, the dim lighting will dominate the main floor apart from the edges which are at its highest emission to inform the availability. The opposite effect will be applied to when the space is not in availability.

The connections are categorised into three sorts. One as the main connection between the two Art exhibition spaces and the Live performance space. These will react to lighting conditions of those three spaces and connects those effects with a gradation sequence of light. On the other half, the other connectors which lead to Dining space, Common space and both of the Projection spaces will react in much the same way as the others, however, they transport the opposite lighting effect to the rest of the programs. The third connectors are referred as Urban connectors as which do not contain any form of light.

Here is some of that visualiosation. the gradation represents diffrence of light intensity.

scenic preservation


I just Came across an idea to use the traffic light for the main lighting system in my Shortcut-Web-Gallery.

Using the three different colours of light to program people's flow within the gallery. For an instance, The green and red light can be used to define the space and navigate people to each spaces, whereas the yellow can be the light to enable viewing of the artwork. The volume of the gallery still bases on the first idea of the "WEB". However, it is no longer a web created by the spaghetti spiral which connects the tube exits but a newly designed traffic light which directly streches out to the gallery. Whilst thinking how my lighting system can invert external use to internal use,

I thought this concept might be quite interesting because it makes the gallery fuction with the whole of oxford circus and the timescale within the gallery totally unique with its site. The spaghetti structure was bit too much of an Alien for the site and was obstructing the views towards all the other landmarks.

Objectively, there are still remaining questions about the shortcut which I need to start tackling.
Do you think this idea is worthwhile sticking with or not at all? Could you please give me some

The program as an idea is to simply give the circus an circulation. Prior to my actual gallery, Im figuring out the inter-connection of the four buildings at each corner and the access from each tubestation exit as which is the first thing to consider in order to solve the jams.

tales of those vibrant things

Ive been trying to figureout the frame work, how one drawing can convey different stories. There are three tales, one is the "upper tale" then "mid tale" and "lower tale". The light will experience the world from a certain height level. I am going to separate the stories according to these heights and dislocate each stories to different frames. This shows the composition of those frames.

about the blog..

It gives me an idea of what I am lacking of through comparing my work to the others. It is also the only space to show something that’s in progress, as it is probably very important because being able to share ones ideas at an early stage allows absorbing a lot of feedbacks or criticisms as opposed to some work that is finished. Subsequently it becomes an important media to share my work and ideas, though I am not too conscious about it.

Lofting method

this drawing shows how my light drawing had came to existence. Each sheet had five controlled curves with which I expressed it as a volume of light. Lofted area sudjests the area of light.

Interactive Traffic

Light as a new “Traffic”. Moves to guide people for the discovery. Now light is released out of its static means.

Traffic is dominated by people and other vehicles operated by humans. Timescale, flow and intensity are the beauty of it. It is an important indicator to differentiate environments as Traffic gives each a characteristic according to its density of humans. Considered as a very important urban infrastructure, however, often the case is that the person outside of the flow would not appreciate the flow as much as the person within. The only physical connection of two different traffics is the unfortunate collision.

"TRAFFIC-Light" contains the light and is activated as it contacts the human. The emitted light is configured linearly and will carry on reacting to a multitude of contacts this will create a flow moving through the structure. Internally, the flow is perceived as a boundary of space, whereas, externally, it is perceived as a visual indicator of flow. Inside and out the structure promotes interaction as the resulting textural environment will intermediate between the viewers and users. It is a way to explore traffic as a communication.

here is my test model. Made myself a crappy switch with which you can light the LEDs where the sheet is at. It does work after all. Tho, the friction is pretty bad. I want some proper thin flat copper tapes!

Boundarie-Z, an infinately growing potential, invites people to play and create their own customized spaces to rest. It can grow to all the dimensions with which people are allowed to fit them into different contexts. The form consists of 15 modules, which are provided to enhance the visual complexity of the structure as well as the total light effect, and sliding sheets which activates the modules to emit the light. Once people have finished aggregating the modules, they can move and add more sheets in order to find their preferred space what consequently relates to the intensity of light. Effectively, the excessive light intensity starts dismissing people and results to a transformation of the structure. People ought to shift or take out the sheets and even change the dimension of the structure. All the modules are consisted of aluminum due to its high ductility and light weight. Tough and thin strips of light (light tape) are attached on to every modules and rubber detachable tracks on the other side to slide the sheets. The emitted light will reflect off any modules which are facing the light and creates a barrier of light on both sides of the person resting.


As far as my concept is concerned, I am referring the moving barriers as my moving boundaries. The boundaries will move upon the consciously fabricated surface which relates back to the initial concept of visualizing boundaries through the medium of light and that they relate to behaviors of the individuals. Moreover, this form serves to introduce a new way of lighting in an urban scale. Questioning the very static way a certain amount of area is lit by one strong light source, this form will experiment distance between light and people and approximation of each light sources. It may well be a guide tool by connecting it from point to point or a waiting line for the bus stops. More potential to be listed…

Extracting the idea from ZIPLOC, I managed to figure out the multiple sliding function of the structure yet having it made out of modules. This is a model wich my 1:5 model is going to look alike. I am going to incorporate my circuit somehow into this system so the module only emits light when in contact with the sheet. I need to figre out how the main electricity gets distriduted to all the modules...

In my light, the emphasis is on LIGHT-HUMAN-FORM. The sensation can only be achieved through two processes. Either to attract people with the form so then this interaction creates a certain shape of light, or to attract people with the light so then this interaction creates a certain form.
Of course the intension is to allow both processes to happen.

As far as the structure of the form is concerned, in order to allow 100% physical interaction, the size can be determined form the ergonomics analysis. Finding a pattern through consolidating people’s posture provides possibilities. The found pattern can be manipulated to create a structure which possesses an infinitely growing potential.


Not only the structure, but also having a maneuverable light source, it increases its interactive quality and serves to transform atmospheric value. The light source will increase its intensity through the increase of its users. The use spans from just a guiding tool to a set of attraction which accommodates people.

Fabrication looks at the portability and its flexibility of materials to satisfy the aim of “growing” and “maneuverable” light. Of course the toughness too…

Streets, around and after the sunset, are a prime examples where the “boundaries” of light are serving the traffic and pedestrians’ safety. In an organized way, every activity holds their peculiar illuminance to indicate their territories as well as avoiding contiguity in an unexpected manner. Especially, boundaries of organizations such as construction areas transforms organically upon the artificial texture in the everyday concern. In parallel with this growth, ways of lightings are getting invented to allow boundaries to be manipulated and transformed in ease and an assured way.


The light which is going to be formed is incorporating these essences, assembled and manipulated in an ease which is then going to be utilized a directional guiding tool. It is shaped for an internal use which then also means that it needs to be evaluated how to be stored. As an object that could be transported around, a certain toughness and a portability is to be sought.

Following the initial interest on human-light relationships, I am putting focus on optical reaction. As the visual light is consisted of the three colours Red, Blue and Green, currently I am trying to approach this instance with these colours by questioning how eyes would adopt the transition of one to another colour. A simple example could be taken from Ski-goggles. Different colours of lenses are available according to different weather conditions. Moreover, the colour of the lens is also considered so your eyes adjust to the colour very quickly. Analyzing this system leads to an understanding of the relation between light and colour and, furthermore, a way to assess the lighting.

I am also interested in the boundary that a light can create. Charging the air within the space and making the light a tangible thing. It is an attitude of evaluating the title so I could seek into the light which is not held in a form but a light which creates a visible form. At the “Eyes, Lies and Illusion” exhibition, an artist managed to project a light in a space which had rotated gradually until it made a corn shape. The value of this work was concentrated on the interactivity, the way people had appreciated it with their whole body. The question remains is how then this sort of visualization of light can incorporate to a space where the main intension is to enable people to appreciate the physical content.
