Theo Jansen

Theo Jansen studied Technical Science in Delft, Holland, but became a
painter. Since 1990 he has been occupied with making new forms of life.
Plastic yellow tubes, rather than seeds or pollen, are used as the basic
material of this new nature. He makes skeletons that are able to walk on the
wind so they don't have to eat. Over time they become better and better at
surviving circumstances such as storms and water. Eventually he wants to put
these animals out in herds on the beaches so they will live their own lives.

Theo Jansen has been a columnist of the Volkskrant (national Dutch
Newspaper) for 19 years. Articles about his work have appeared in New
Scientist, Wired and Popular Science. His exhibition in the Kunsthal in
Rotterdam (2002) drew 14 000 visitors. He has written three books about
technical art and evolution. Several television performances prompted
thousands of people to go to the beach to see him work.
