Passports + Tutorials

1. EVERYONE BRING YOUR PASSPORTS TOMORROW. You will all need to go to the Japan Center to buy Japan Rail tickets. They will cost approximately 149pounds. But if we don't buy them before leaving we will spend 4-5 times as much on train tickets when we are there. You will need your passports in order to purchase the rail tickets. I will be going down there around 1pm so if you want to go as a group - meet me @ AA and we'll head down together. (it's at piccadilly circus)

December 03 - 15

We are going to:

lovetokyo.jpg

Will be a great trip thanks to Mr. Iwamura (Kanto's father) who's organized a workshop in Yokohama for us. The rest of the trip is being planned out and shaping up very nicely - will post itinerary here as soon as it's finished.

Frame

This month's issue of Frame has quite a few interesting projects in it you should all look at. One article in particular references the work of Es Devlin - a set designer in London who uses lighting effects and projections as set designs. p 74-81. Also briefly profiled are a set of lights by Bosung Kim who graduated last year from the RCA. I saw both of the lights at the end of year show - one of them is really very beautiful. With a simple pulley action the light collapses together and then turns itself inside-out to transfrom from downlight to uplight. p. 155. Check out p 56 - light installation by korban / flaubert.

laser cutting madness

image reference for Miho - this model was generated from flat lasercut sheets that were then painstakingly folded and shaped onto the structural ribs. Model by Pulse/Kuatic.

Light Tape...

The tape has landed... Not in time for our meeting yesterday morning, but in time for a weekend of exploration into this stuff. And let me say now it is truly amazing. Click on my page to discover more.

PLEASE NOTE: There was quite a bit of interest in the technology when I showed it yesterday and it would be cool if a few of us used it, but please DO NOT approach the company 'Elumin8', based in Dorset, UK as if more than one student contacted them there would be less of a chance of going as far with them (sponsorship etc). A concerted approach would be better! If you haven't got a contact of your own let me know as we can combine forces and present them with multiple individual projects to fund/sponsor, whatever.

Wave of the Future

For those of you who scoffed at the impracticality of my angler fish hat, check out the following link: http://europa.eu.int/comm/research/industrial_technologies/articles/article_1557_en.html It will soon be possible to incorporate flexible, light-emitting compounds onto clothing with ink jet printers. According to the link, you will also be able to fold your television screen like a newspaper! I'm not sure about the utility of that invention, however.

A2

If there's still confusion as to what size an A2 is - look here.

firefox is foxy

Just a quick note to let you know you should all download FIREFOX. Firstly, (a slightly frivolous reason) the inter3 website looks better in firefox than in explorer (the menu is a bit weird in explorer). Second, it's just a much better and faster web browser. So go to Firefox and download it - you can also import your bookmarks from explorer.

Velux Award 2006 _ Light of Tomorrow

Velux has launched its LIGHT OF TOMORROW competition for the year 2006. Now open for registration until 10 February and the submission deadline is 5 May - so there will be plenty of time for you to all format and submit entries over the Term 2 Break! It's a student competition - you can work in teams or submit individually on a set of 4 themes ranging from daylight to artificial lighting. Jury is Kengo Kuma, Reinier de Graaf (from OMA), Roisin Heneghan and others. Mey Yee has loads of brochures on the competition in her office - swing by and pick one up.

Purves & Purves

The image below follows on from a comment to Maciej's blog. I wasn't sure how you upload a picture onto a comments page so I uploaded it here instead. It's a light from Purves and Purves which reminded me of Maciej's model of reflecting light back to its source to create a volume of light.

Replying to MArtin's comment to PAtrick's entry of MAciej's blog on NAtasha's Inter3 site.
